Why I never wear green on St. Partick's Day
For most people, St. Patrick’s Day is a celebration of all things Irish. For me, it is a celebration of my Dad and his influence on my life.
He would have been 77 years old today and still smiling.
There are so many things that he taught me, and I probably don’t remember them all. The one that stuck with me the most was his belief in me.
He often said this to me, “You can do anything that you want to do in life, if only you set your mind to it.“
I’m not sure why this one stuck, but I’m glad that it did. It has certainly served me well over the years.
Like when my heart was set on going to the Air Force Academy and he helped me get a nomination from our congressman, Al Gore Jr.
Or, in my first “real” job out of college in the medical device industry. I had a huge project to get a new international certification for our company called ISO 9001. At the time, consultants and colleagues were telling us that it couldn’t be done without help and at a cost of +$200,000. Instead, we did it in house in half of the time and at 10% of the expected cost.
Or, when I wanted to be a professional fundraiser for the American Heart Association in his honor. We had double digit increases two years in a row (during a recession) and raised over $1,000,000 in a mostly rural area of Middle Tennessee.
Or, when I decided to become a Realtor and sell bank-owned properties. I was told that it was nearly impossible to break into the business and it would take more than two years to get my first listing. I listed and sold thirteen bank-owned homes in my first full year in 2006. That was well before the market crashed.
I learned from him not to listen to the naysayers and those who said it couldn’t be done. I learned that most things were not impossible. They were just harder than most people were willing to work.
So if you are facing an impossible task today, I know exactly where you are coming from.
I’d love to talk to you about those obstacles that are standing in your way. And help you find a path from where you are today, to where you want to be.
