We must hang together or we will all hang separately
These men looked at their actions as a death sentence.
Two days earlier, the Second Continental Congress voted in favor of a resolution for independence in the midst of the Revolutionary War.
Then on July 4th, 1776 they pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor by openly declaring independence from the British Empire.
John Hancock, the President of the Continental Congress, proudly proclaimed after writing his name in large, plain letters said, “There! John Bull can read my name without spectacles. Now let him double the price on my head, for this is my defiance.”
[John Bull was a cartoon figure that represented England in those days to the colonists. Think of John Bull as the English cousin of Uncle Sam.]
Then John Hancock turned to the other members of Congress and declared, "We must be unanimous. There must be no pulling different ways. We must all hang together.”
Ben Franklin, known for his wit and wisdom, added, “Yes, we must all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.”
Both John and Ben knew that in difficult times when all the odds are against you, that they must stick together if they are going to prevail.
A house divided against itself cannot stand.
And it’s just as true today in life and business.
