There is a difference...somehow

The difference between a realtor and a real estate agentEarlier this year the popular television show Modern Family teamed up with the National Association of Realtors to show the difference between a real estate agent and a Realtor.

In this hilarious clip, Gloria (Sophia Vergara) declares, “There is a difference…somehow.”

Most folks know there is a difference, however, they do not realize that our adherence to the Realtor Code of Ethics is what really sets us apart.  The Realtor Code of Ethics explains our Duties to our Clients and Customers, Duties to the Public and our Duties to fellow Realtors.

We will look at these duties another time because I want to focus on the Preamble to the Code of Ethics.

I know what your thinking.  The Preamble…what could be so important in the opening?

When you read the first few lines, you will see that Realtors believe that the widest distribution of land ownership is in the best interests of the nation and it’s citizens.

This is our sacred duty and obligation to you and the rest of our fellow citizens.

As you probably know from reading the news, home ownership rates are still on the decline.  They have been on a downward spiral since the mortgage crisis started almost 10 years ago.

Our government and the banking industry tried to increase home ownership by relaxing the standards required to qualify for a loan and selling new securities to cover the additional risk.

They did not consider the consequences of their actions and the world economy nearly collapsed.

Their intention might have been honorable, but the result was an unmitigated disaster.

Instead of lowering the standards, I believe the best way to increase home ownership is to help improve the economic situation of those who can’t qualify today.

And not by throwing money at the problem.

Instead, let’s lift each other up by sharing our knowledge, experience and resources.

So, if you know someone who needs guidance, direction or just a hand up, then let me know.

I would love to sit down and talk with them.
