The New Heart of Sylvan Park: McCabe Community Center
In the heart of Sylvan Park, at the bend in Murphy Road, sits a shining little gem in the community. I have probably passed right by this place without giving it a second thought hundreds of times on the way to and fro in my busy life. One day a friend asked me to join her at a yoga class at McCabe Community Center and the rest, as they say, is history. I was HOOKED!
This active hub of Sylvan Park offers a monthly membership for a low fee of $30.00 which gives access to the state of the art weight and exercise room and personal trainers. Additionally, you can take advantage of the myriad of exercise classes: boot camps, yoga, senior strength, Zumba, ballet barre, pilates and more – all for a mere $3.00 per class with no membership fee required. There are other wonderful amenities and activities to take advantage of for adults such as, bike rentals to bike the scenic Richland Greenway, adult basketball gym time and kickball league and indoor walking/running track.
The children's activities include after school camps and homework help, baseball and basketball leagues and fabulous summer camps which include dance, art and exercise activities. There is a wonderful park-like playground available for all with ample parking or if you live in the neighborhood you can take an easy afternoon stroll with the whole family and enjoy the swings and gym equipment for the kids while you visit with your neighbors.
For me, the most shining attribute is the incredible sense of community this place provides. Each time you walk in you are greeted by name by a friendly and knowledgeable staff. The instructors are highly trained and extremely personable and willing to share their vast knowledge with you before or after class. The faces in the classes I have chosen are now familiar and many of them have names attached and are becoming fast friends. If you want an opportunity to give back to your community, you can join Achilles International on Wednesday evenings, year round, to pair up with someone with a disability and help them navigate the Greenway or take a class (if the weather is inclement). You can also find out about all the great activities, from festivals to 5k's and more at the Center. In addition, they have a facebook page which lets you know of new classes or any classes which might have changed times or cancelled for any reason.
